Intuitive Knowing
30 tips in 30 days: #24.
If logic is the left-brain path to knowledge for making decisions and solving problems, intuition is the right-brain path. Logic can be tested as valid and sound. Intuition is harder to prove as reliable. At best, we can trust our intuition and see what happens.
Webster’s dictionary defines intuition as “quick and ready insight; the act or process of coming to direct knowledge without reasoning or inferring.” The word is from the Latin, intuitus, “to look within.” Thomas De Quincey in 1840 coined the verb, intuit.
Carl Jung wrote that intuition, is “perception via the unconscious.” Jeffrey Mishlove says, “Intuition is the most intuitive thing intuitive intuitives can intuit.” I say, intuition is intelligence without intellect. Beyond gut instinct, intuition comes from a wiser place than our life experience, inherited traits or learned knowledge.
Everyone has intuition. We use intuition when we get a “hunch,” when we form first impressions of people we meet, when we solve a problem without first thinking though all of the options. We use our intuition when we turn left at this corner instead of that corner and then bump into an old friend we haven’t seen in ages.
For me, intuition is a transcendant spiritual experience. I “know” things sometimes that I have no earthly way of knowing. My higher self speaks to my conscious self. An example is my intuitive feeling that now is the time to wholly revise and republish this book. Logic tells me the prior editions suffice, but my soul insists that I rewrite the book to make it more spiritual and practical, so I’m going ahead.
A legitimate question arises here. Is our intuition the voice of our higher self, or do our intuitive impulses come from spiritual sources beyond ourselves? Does intuition include any messages we receive subconsciously from spirit guides, for instance, like ancestors trying to advise us? Do our intuitive hints ever come directly from God or whatever you call the Source? Seems to me that we know a lot less about intuition than we think we know.
